OWL Online PD Series: PPATH for Online Learning

Online PD begins at 4:00pm PST/ 5:00pm MST/ 6:00pm CST/ 7:00pm EST

This five-session series will focus on breaking down the framework of OWL into concentrated and comprehensive pieces. Whether you know nothing about PPATH, are somewhat familiar with it after participating in an OWL PD, or you have been implementing each step of PPATH along the way- this series is designed to deepen your understanding of each part of PPATH for successful implementation and direction in your online learning environment.

Introduction to PPATH- April 1, 2020

What is PPATH and how does it relate to my online classroom  and community? PPATH is the backbone and foundation of the OWL structure. This session provides an overview of what PPATH is and shares how it will create a high-functioning, dynamic learning environment. When used together, the five pieces of PPATH provide a clear direction and set of strategies that will guide you in planning and overseeing students learning and interaction.

How to Use Pairings and Groupings Online- April 15, 2020

The social aspect of language acquisition is crucial for student production and growth. How can we create an environment where students are constantly interacting with one another while staying in the target language, even at the novice level and online?! This session will unravel the science and purpose behind pairing, grouping and game structures and how we can start using them more frequently, effectively and purposefully in our online classes today.

How to Use Prompts & Questions Online- April 29, 2020

Prompts- What should we ask our students to do and how should we ask them to do it? What will prompt the task, and what will the task be? This session will focus on how to develop prompts using the OWL Curriculum Triangle and the ACTFL Proficiency levels as the guiding foundations. These tools will aide in differentiating for our learners. Additionally, we will discuss strategies for high student-engagement and production in an online environment and how they are a direct result of the prompts we create.

How to Hold Students Accountable Online – May 13, 2020

With the challenges of online learning, we are actually given a wonderful opportunity with the platforms available to us to incorporate this element of PPATH effectively. We can check the completion of tasks and provide appropriate feedback and resources to fill in “gaps” discovered in the production process, while ensuring further development of communication skills.  Most excitingly, we can pull new threads to start the PPATH process all over again. This often-overlooked step is given new life in our online environment and can provide relevant content to keep students engaged! Don’t miss this session, as it will help you provide extra support to students and allow them to continue to grow.

How to Use Transitions and Hooks Online- May 20, 2020

Two of the most unique and most commonly recognized components of OWL are Transitions and Hooks. Transitions are intended to help break down the filter, create movement and build the community. Hooks pique students interest and foster an engaging atmosphere. Especially in this new learning environment, hooks and transitions used together are powerful tools to keep content relevant and interest high. If you are wondering how to use transitions online, keep kids moving remotely and incorporate hooks for maximum buy-in, this is the session for you.
