Online PD Series: Winter Toolkit

This ten-week series will provide you with all the tools necessary for an organized and confident start to the 2023 year! Designed for both new and experienced OWL’ers, each week we will discover and explore resources guaranteed to leave you supported by other colleagues and with fresh ideas.

SEL to Start the New Year:  The Power of the Organic Vocabulary List: January 10th 4:00pm PST – 5:00pm PST
As you begin to further explore how to create more student-driven learning environments, this session will demonstrate how how to keep the content that arises in each of our classes organized. From both the facilitator and other teachers, learn about sample systems for creating and maintaining an organic vocabulary list (*or an Organic Road Map), manually and digitally.  We will discuss techniques and strategies used to grow and use our language lists as one of the most powerful resources in our teaching, a resource and process that significantly impacts and improves student language growth. Whether you are currently using OWL strategies, or new to the techniques, these concepts can be implemented across all ages, languages and programs.
How to Plan Student-Driven Content: January 24th 4:00pm PST – 5:00pm PST

Are you wondering how to make content relevant and high interest? In this session, each participant will create their own topic web, based on their current topics and content in class. These will be shared out and you will collaborate with other participants about where each topic could progress or grow, infusing yourself with a wealth of ideas and directions to go! For each progression, we will include conversations and ideas around the themes of literacy, flow and post-planning. Threads & Progressions are the foundation of the OWL Curriculum Triangle and allow us to use our students as the driving force of content as we push them to higher levels of performance. Don’t miss this one!

Assessments & Feedback –  February 7th 4:00pm – 5:00pm PST

Are you wondering how to provide consistent, effective feedback? This session will lead you through effective feedback strategies based on the student’s ACTFL level. This helps us know how to construct proficiency assessments that truly tell us what we need to know about what our students can do and how to help naturally push them forward. We will build proficiency assessments during the session. Purchase the Rubrics Resource Download at a discounted price and begin to use the strategies immediately with students!

See the Growth: Organically Raise Students’ ACTFL Level: February 21 4:00pm PST – 5:00pm PST

This session will give you a chance to create authentic content from progressions pulled from your current topics in class, or previous sessions of this series. Through the review and use of the ACTFL levels, and the defining characteristics of each, we will become more mindful of the prompts and tasks we are giving our students. Come explore when, where and how to push for the skills necessary to acquire and grow in your target language!

Games and Activities for All Modes: March 7 4:00pm PST – 5:00pm PST

This session will encourage participants to think about the techniques and strategies they have learned about and implemented in their practice, and how they may apply to the development of new games and activities, as well as the review of existing ones. We will explore all three modes of communication: Interpersonal , Presentational and Interpretive and each participant will have a chance to share their favorite game or activity that will be recorded and sent out as a dynamic resource to refer to in the future!
