Burning Questions: An OWL Online PD Series

Winter is here and educators are grappling with burning questions that keep them from creating the joyful, engaging classrooms that had blossomed pre-pandemic. This five session series takes the questions that OWL has heard from educators, administrators, and students and gives them feasible, realistic solutions that can be implemented in the virtual, hybrid, or socially distanced classroom. Through the vital elements of Social Emotional Learning and Organic World Language’s systems of engagement and learning, teachers will gain the tools and empowerment they need to thrive through an uncertain school year.

Session 1: Where is the love? Positive Relationships & Community in the New Year (Relationship Skills)- January 12, 2021

A new year can be a reset for our classroom communities. It is essential that we first and foremost build relationship skills with our students.

This interactive session will:

  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques to elicit output from students.
  • Practice active listening strategies that give students the space to share.
  • Implement activities that create teamwork and collaborative problem solving skills
  • Discuss ways we can navigate different social and cultural settings with our students.

Session 2: Why does it Matter? Providing Context and the ‘Why’- January 26, 2021

Virtual and hybrid learning demonstrate the essential need for students and teachers to embody SEL strategies in daily practice. When students recognize the relevance of content that is being used in the classroom, and its connection to themselves, they are more willing to connect.

This session will implement OWL strategies to demonstrate how to:

  • Provide strategies that give students the space and support to identify their emotions.
  • Build methods that allow students to see themselves within, and as an integral part of the classroom curriculum.
  • Understand the importance of proficiency in language development.

Session 3: How can I? Establishing Growth Mindset & Purpose- February 9, 2021

An essential goal in the virtual or hybrid classroom is personal agency and motivation. Cultivating self-management and growth strategies allows students and teachers to effectively progress throughout an uncertain year.

While experiencing OWL methods, participants will:

  • Share strategies and techniques for self-discipline and self organization.
  • Create a bank of positive-language based feedback strategies to empower student’s personal and classroom collective goals.
  • Model techniques for stress management.

Session 4: Can You Hear Me Now? Activating Student Voice & Presence- February 23, 2021

Keeping equity and well-being in mind, it is important to help build a sense of desire in students to establish and maintain a presence in class. By keeping cameras on, using microphones, and being aware of their own selves, we can get our students to connect and plug in.

This engaging session will:

  • Build approaches that promote each individual’s role in the classroom community’s success.
  • Facilitate reflection practices that allow students to recognize and evaluate the consequences of their actions.
  • Collaboratively create content that sparks a curiosity in students.

Session 5:  Why Should I Care? Making Relevant Connections through Culture- March 9, 2021

Culture and literacy are the gateway to our student’s ability to understand different perspectives and cultivate empathy for others. Using these resources allows students to create a space of relevance that connects to a more global whole.

While experiencing  OWL strategies, participants will:

  • Share methods that create opportunities for students to understand different perspectives.
  • Build strategies that elicit conversations regarding equity issues.
  • Express and understand the importance of gratitude and compassion in the classroom.
